PA-DuPont Zytel 101L
PA-DuPont Zytel 101L is a lubricated polyamide 66 (PA66) resin developed by Celanese (formerly DuPont), highly specified for structural and wear-resistant applications requiring an optimal balance of stiffness and toughness. Boasting a density of 1.14 g/cm³ and a melting point of 262°C, this unmodified nylon grade features excellent chemical resistance, high mechanical strength, and exceptional self-lubricating sliding properties. Jucheng Precision, holding IATF 16949 and ISO 9001 certifications, excels in processing Zytel 101L. Leveraging our five-axis CNC-machined tooling and scientific moisture-dry controls, we mitigate nylon’s high shrinkage (1.3%-2.2%) to deliver dimensionally stable gears and brackets verified by Zeiss CMM.
DuPont Zytel 101L Mechanical and Physical Profile
Zytel® 101L NC010 is a lubricated, unmodified polyamide 66 (PA66) resin engineered by Celanese (formerly DuPont) to deliver high tensile strength, stiffness, and excellent wear resistance under dry-as-molded (DAM) conditions:
| Physical & Strength Parameter | Zytel 101L Typical Value (DAM) | Engineering Advantage for Molded Parts |
|---|---|---|
| Tensile Stiffness | Tensile Modulus 3100 MPa / Yield 82 MPa | Provides superior room-temperature load-bearing capacity, preventing deformation in dynamic mechanical gears and levers. |
| Self-Lubrication | Integrated Internal Lubricant package | Minimizes surface friction and wear, allowing gears, sliding bearings, and pulleys to run quietly and smoothly without oil. |
| Toughness Balance | ISO Notched Izod Impact 5.5 kJ/m² | Provides excellent energy absorption under impact load, preventing structural cracking of dynamic snap-fits and hinges. |
Wear and Structural Process Compatibility for Zytel 101L
With its high mechanical strength and lubricated matrix, Zytel 101L processes reliably in high-tolerance tools:
| Molding Process | Molding Compatibility & Operational Details |
|---|---|
| Self-Lubricating Gears & Bearings | Excellent. Highly suitable for precision spur gears, sliding bearings, pulleys, dynamic rollers, and drive shafts requiring high dimensional accuracy. |
| Heavy-Duty Brackets & Fasteners | Excellent. Ideal for functional automotive brackets, cable ties, heavy-duty snap-fit clamps, structural fasteners, and hardware housings. |
| Multi-Cavity Electronics Molding | Good. High flowability and low molecular weight support rapid cavity filling on multi-cavity runs for terminal blocks and switches. |
PA-DuPont Zytel 101L Tooling & Moisture Control Guide
Processing a semi-crystalline and highly hygroscopic polyamide like Zytel 101L demands careful moisture drying and precise gate planning to manage high shrinkage:
- Rigorous Desiccant Pre-Drying: Polyamide 66 absorbs moisture aggressively. If molded wet, the polymer chains hydrolyze, destroying mechanical toughness and causing surface splay. We dry raw resin in desiccant dryers at 80°C–100°C (176°F–212°F) for 4–6 hours to keep moisture strictly below 0.10% (ideally <0.08%).
- Managing Anisotropic Shrinkage: Unreinforced PA66 exhibits high, directional shrinkage (typically 1.3% to 2.2%). Our tooling division utilizes advanced Moldflow analysis during our free 24-hour DFM stage to balance gate placement, preventing part warpage and ensuring exact gear tooth geometries.
- Melt & Mold Temperature Profile: Processing melt temperatures are maintained between 280°C and 300°C (536°F to 572°F). Mold temperatures are kept at 60°C to 90°C (140°F to 194°F) using pressurized water heaters to maximize mechanical crystallinity.
- Tool Steel Hardness & Polish: To achieve smooth surfaces and prevent rapid gate wear, we use hardened S136 stainless steel mold cavity blocks, mirror-polished on our 5-axis CNCs. This ensures dynamic components release cleanly without drag marks.
