Ultrasonic Welding
Ultrasonic welding joins compatible thermoplastic components by applying high-frequency mechanical vibration under controlled force. Local heating at the joint allows the material to fuse. Its suitability depends on the resin pair, joint design and how vibration reaches the interface. Jucheng assembly review should therefore begin with the complete molded components and their functional requirements, not a weld setting chosen in isolation.
Design the joint to concentrate energy
A plain contact surface is not automatically a reliable weld joint. The interface needs geometry suited to the selected material and assembly, such as a designed energy-concentrating feature or an appropriate shear-style joint. Available access and dimensional variation influence the choice.
Joint collapse changes the final assembly dimensions. Include the expected movement in the drawing and consider internal clearances, gasket compression and visible seam position. Do not assume a strong weld also preserves every pre-weld dimension.
The horn and nest must work with the part
The horn needs a suitable contact surface, while the nest supports the component and resists movement. Flexible walls can absorb energy or show unwanted marks. Nearby delicate components may also impose limits on the process.
| Assembly feature | Review focus |
|---|---|
| Visible horn-contact face | Acceptable witness marks and surface protection |
| Long or flexible wall | Support and vibration transmission |
| Enclosed cavity | Flash, debris and internal clearance |
| Sealed interface | Continuous joint geometry and defined leak test |
Release against function, not machine settings alone
Record the production process window, but also verify the product requirement. A joint used only for retention needs different evidence from a fluid-containing enclosure. Destructive strength testing, dimensional inspection or leak testing should be selected according to the design requirement.
Use representative molded parts when setting up the process. Resin changes, moisture-sensitive material conditions and variation at the joint can affect welding even when nominal dimensions look similar.
Frequently asked questions
Can any two plastics be ultrasonically welded?
No. Compatibility, melting behavior and the ability to transmit energy must be evaluated. Matching color is not evidence of material compatibility.
Is the assembly serviceable afterward?
A welded joint is generally intended as a permanent connection. If routine opening is required, review a mechanical assembly strategy instead.
Does welding guarantee a leak-tight enclosure?
No. Seal performance must be designed and demonstrated with an agreed test on the actual assembly.
Bring joining into the molding review
Coordinate the interface with custom mold making and plastic injection molding. Provide CAD, resin grades and the required strength or leak criteria for a project review.
